Drive time, Santa Fe to site of hunt, about 1 hr 10 min.
Take I25 North from Santa Fe towards Denver. About 5 miles before Las Vegas is the Romeroville exit #339 (good place for gas). Exit at Romeroville. Turn right (R) and drive a few feet to the left turn (L) that puts you onto the frontage road going north along the freeway, on its east side. Go 3.2 miles to the left turn (L) to the west, back over the freeway, that is NM Hwy 283. Follow this Hwy, that will climb the foothills, for 8 miles. At 7.7 miles, you will pass one entrance to the ranch, with stone entry ways on each side of the road, one to the north, and one to the south. Do not take either of these entries. Go about 1/2 mile further where the hard surface HWY 283 bends to the right, and the road going straight is a lesser road. At this point, on your right (R) is another ranch entry with a sigh that says Indian Head Ranch. Turn right (R) onto this gravel road and follow it about 2 miles to the shipping pens.
Now, if you are so inclined, there is an informal gathering the night before, and you are invited, and welcome to spend the night. However, the catch: we can make no guarantees about the road conditions to this part of the ranch, nor can we guarantee a warm bedroom. If the roads are passable, and you have interest in joining in Friday night, what we can guarantee is: a warm, fully modern bath house, a meal to last you well into the next morning, and a warm, fancy place for entertainment and camaraderie (if its too cold outside around the camp fire). There may be a warm bunk in the bunk house, there may also be a warm bunk at the headquarters house in the guest bunk room above the stables. Although there is a fair chance these inside bunk spaces will be available to us, it is suggested that if you join us Friday evening, be prepared to sleep in your trailer, with free access to the bath house.
DIRECTIONS TO BUNKHOUSE FRIDAY EVENING:
Remember the two ranch entries in the directions above that you were not to take. These dual entries off Hwy 283 (one to the north and one to the south) are about 1/2 mile east of the ranch entry leading to the shipping pens. The one to the south leads to the bunk house. There is one fork in the road along the way; take the fork to the left (L). From the highway to the bunk house is about 5 miles of dirt road. You will cross the stream twice. If the roads are dry, the crossing is firm bottom. Proceed without concern. Friday evening starts about 6:00pm.
Again, please help us get a correct head count. RSVP.
See you this weekend.
