(Comments made by John Snyder, DVM, relating to good horsekeeping for our territory and climate)
- First, be sure your horse is hunting fit. Unfit horses tire, fall, and may injure themselves and you unnecessarily.
- Clip your horse, at least with a Trace clip, and possibly Hunter or Full clips to ensure they do not overheat on a long gallop. (To see a wide range of potential clipping styles, see here.)
- Shoe for maximum protection. Pads, at least in front, are a must. For traction, this territory is OK for simple heel-caulked keg shoes, but some may prefer borium or studs. Some of our fixtures, such as Buckman Well, are sandy and more forgiving, but a good deal of the terrain near the Horse Park has challenging areas of basalt and other rock that can put your horse out of hunting for weeks at a time if his feet are vulnerable.
